The weather was perfect for hanging out on the beach, not so great for running!

The weather was perfect for hanging out on the beach, not so great for running!

I ran this race last year (link to race report) as well. It’s officially called Heinolan kaupunkipuistojuoksu. There were slight changes to the course this year, it was a bit better as they had removed one silly loop. Perhaps half of it is on gravel, but the elevation profile is quite good, and I consider it a fairly fast course; it’s also quite pretty. The spectators should be kept in control better though, there are a couple of sections where people just hang out on the race course. Another aspect I don’t much like is that the 1/4 marathon starts at the exact same time, causing unnecessary congestion on the already pretty narrow race course. But all in all it’s an enjoyable little race, and I may very well do it again next year.

Unfortunately I was 3:05min slower this year, but I’ve got a good excuse! The weather was way too hot, at least +26 Celsius and not a cloud in the sky. I was quite excited about the race however, and even though I knew that the weather would make it tough, I decided to set off at a PB pace, 3:55min/km, and just see how long I could keep it up. It was always a risk, but I didn’t have much to lose since I already had a solid half marathon performance from June in Idaho. Anyway, I’ll let the splits tell you the story; they’re pretty ugly…

Splits (elapsed time):
5k 19:21,9
10k 20:37,7 (39:59,6)
15k 22:23,6 (1:02:23)
20k 21:23,7 (1:23:47)
Total: 21,32k in 1:29:01,5

Part of the race course, just before the race.

So, as you can see from the splits, I set off way too fast. After about 2k I was at fourth place. The problems started to accumulate already after 7k: I started to feel the heat and my pace dropped slightly, and soon I got my first heat/dehydration related stitch — the first of three. I was still managing a decent pace, but shortly after the 9k mark I somehow got a huge pebble in my shoe and had to stop to remove it. I dropped down to fifth place because of that, but worse than that was that I never quite managed to get my pace back up, I had lost the rhythm and the heat was really starting to get to me. I forced a gel down around the 12k mark, which may or may not have helped but it certainly made me thirsty. I could’ve used more aid stations as I was not getting enough liquid; I’m just glad that this wasn’t a full marathon! Well, I remained at fifth place until the end, but the sixth guy was on my heels up to the last km, and probably helped me to push a little bit as otherwise I would’ve been running completely on my own. Indeed, I was back to a reasonable pace on the last 2,5k.

I wasn’t the only one who struggled. The top three was the same as last year, although in a different order. For instance, last year’s winner, who was now third, was 6:20min slower than a year ago. No one got under 1:20, whereas last year the top three were all well under. Given that, my relative performance was in fact better than a year ago: I was 8:21min behind the winner this year and 8:52min behind last year. It’s a pity that the weather was like this because I feel like I might’ve even had a PB in my legs: they felt fine all the way through (even though I’ve got a slight niggle on my left leg today).

I’m pondering about my next race now. There’s a possibility of a trail marathon on the first day of September, but I’d rather try out a fast half again since that would be a better tester, and I’d really like a chance to improve my times, as I haven’t managed a single PB this year.

Race Report: St. Joe River Marathon, St. Maries, Idaho

02 Jul
July 2, 2012

Race date: 10.6.2012
Official Finishing Time: 1:27:46 chip time
Official Position: 6/258 (finishers), which puts me in the fastest 2.33%
Race Number: 220

This race report is a bit overdue since I was travelling for three weeks after the race. I’ll keep it brief! We arrived at the tiny town of St. Maries, Idaho the night before the race. It was pouring rain and pretty cold too, not very inviting. Decided to go for long sleeves the next morning and I didn’t regret it!

We picked this race since we were travelling through Idaho anyway, from the West Coast towards Yellowstone, and it looked like a reasonably fast one. The course was flat, but it came as a surprise that most of it was on gravel. I don’t think I lost too much time because of that, but it wasn’t quite ideal. The bigger problem was that after the half way point I was running virtually on my own. The top three were way beyond my reach (all finished in sub 80min) and I couldn’t even make myself catch up with the fourth and the fifth guy, who were about a minute and a half ahead of me.

Preparing for the race with Elizabeth

Preparing for the race with Elizabeth

Well, my time wasn’t so bad in the end, given that my training has been far from ideal during the spring. But it’s clear that I’m far from where I wanted to be this time of the year. The Berlin marathon is only three months away, and I even set a sub 80min half marathon as my ambitious goal for the year. That’s unlikely to happen, but I’d be happy to just match last year’s performance at the moment (my PB for the half stands at 1:25:15).

Elizabeth ran a respectable 1:45:37 — a PB by some margin — and finished 39th overall.

I did manage a decent position in this race at any rate, and in fact I was the first in my age group. This was only the second time that the race has been organized, and it’s a small race to begin with, so the level wasn’t very high. I had some hopes of a podium finish beforehand, but as it turned out fourth place would’ve been the best I could’ve possibly managed. I was slowing down badly towards the end, as is evident from the splits below. The first 5k were nicely within target pace (4min/km), but by 10k I had dropped slightly below and there was no way to keep it up after that.

Splits (elapsed time):
5k 19:46.21
10k 20:44.29 (40:30.50)
15k 21:12.23 (1:01:42.73)
20k 21:17.17 (1:22:59.90)
Total: 21,18k in 1:27:59.1

I’ve got another half marathon coming up on July 28th in Finland, it’s the Heinola half-marathon which I ran in 1:25:55 last year. The course is pretty fast and I’ll give it all I’ve got, but my eyes are already on the Berlin marathon, so I’m training with Berlin in mind rather than the half. Still, I’d love to match last year’s performance, or even sneak in a PB. We’ll see…

Race Report: Pääkaupunkijuoksu 2011

18 Sep
September 18, 2011

Race Date: 18.9.2011
Official Finishing Time: 1:28:32 chip time
Official Overall Position: 37/897 (finishers), which puts me in the fastest 4.12%
Race number: 1709

This half-marathon, called ‘Capital City Run’, is already on its 38th year. It takes place in the Central Park, which is where I do most of my training runs. The route was thus familiar, and I knew that it’s fairly hilly. It’s also completely on gravel roads, although pretty good ones. It was clear that I wasn’t going to break any records today, and in the end I was more than 3min slower than my PB for the distance, but I was hoping to get to 1:27:xx. My training has been far from ideal during the summer though, and just over a week ago I stubbed my toe quite badly, fearing that it broke. Fortunately the toe didn’t give me any trouble during the race.

Weather was perfect: mostly sunny, no wind, and about 15 degrees Celsius. The route goes through a lot of woods, so very little direct sun light as well. Not much to say about the organization, things went smoothly enough. Just two complaints: there was no free storage for gear, and I wasn’t going to pay for it — fortunately no one nicked my gear. I would’ve also liked at least one more drink station, there were just three. I took a Clif Shot Blok before each one and just consumed water (from those bloody plastic cups), but I could’ve used some more liquids.

Splits:
5k 20:15,4
10k 20:46,4 (41:01,8 total)
15k 20:52,4 (1:01:54,2 total)
20k 21:18,2 (1:23:12,4 total)
Total: 21.28k in 1:28:36,0

I managed to keep a fairly steady pace despite the hills, although it’s clear that they started to slow me down towards the end. Strangely, the first 7km or so were the toughest (and the fastest), possibly because I still had the idea of trying for a fast time at the back of my mind. But after it was clear that this was just going to be a fight for a decent time I could ease into the run a bit more and even started overtaking people. I followed a pack of six or so runners for quite some time, overtaking a few of them on the way, and then I ended up running on the heels of the second lady for the last 5-6km, she beat me by 2sec with a finishing sprint — I really couldn’t be bothered! I was 19th in the men’s general series (under 35), so I guess the result was decent, but I do need to get some proper training in. Of course, Amsterdam marathon is coming up in just under a month, so I’ll have to start tapering for that in a week or two. This was my last half marathon for the season — I ran three and got progressively slower! Well, my PB stands at 1:25:15, which is just 16sec short of my season’s target, so I’m more than happy about that. I’ve still got one 10k race planned this year, in November.

Average heart rate was 176 bpm, which suggests that I ran pretty much as fast as I had in me. Garmin reports the total height gain at 186m, which sounds about right.

Race Report: Heinolan Kaupunkipuistojuoksu

August 9, 2011

Race Date: 30.7.2011
Official Finishing Time: 1:25:55,0 chip time
Official Overall Position: 6/141 (finishers), which puts me in the fastest 4.23%
Race number: 59

I’ve been putting off this report a bit because I hoped to find some photos of the event, but nothing has emerged so far, so it’s about time to post it. This half marathon in Heinola, Finland was arranged only for the second time, and I didn’t know much about it. The timing was good however and since the field wasn’t particularly strong last year and the race is very small, I thought I’d have a chance to place quite well. I was looking to get below 85min and beat my PB of 1:25:15. As you can see, I wasn’t far off, but it just didn’t happen: I couldn’t speed up on the last 5k even though I knew that a PB would still be on. I had used all my energy on the first half and I was in fact running by myself for the whole second half — a typical problem of a small race. I did run a few kilometres with a Spanish guy in his fifties, who ended up finishing just a minute and a half behind me, but the fifth guy was too much ahead of me, almost three minutes. The course itself was fairly flat and quite fast, although most of it was on gravel rather than proper road and there was even a brief bit which would have to be considered a trail. Other than that there were a few bridge crossings and a couple of tiny hills, but all in all it’s a pretty fast course, so that’s no excuse really. The day was nice and sunny but not too hot (although it could’ve been cooler).

The organization of the race seemed ok for the most part, but the course itself had a few problems as there were some artifical sharp turns and the finishing straight was stupidly along the course so that you had to pass it three times. There was one 10k loop which was done twice and then an additional 1,1k loop that was not particularly well situated, but fortunately I had explored the route beforehand on my warmup. At the finish I was quite disappointed to discover that there was no food, no sports drinks, not even water! We got a single bottle of water with the registration pack, but you’d expect a bit more for 25 euros… Aid stations along the course were fine though, with both water and sports drinks (although I hate those bloody cups, they should have small bottles instead).

The trip to Heinola took about 2,5h from Helsinki by bus, a bit boring but not too bad. I went with Elizabeth, who raced this distance for the first time. She finished as the sixth lady with a respectable time of 1:46:39,8. We managed to find a decent Chinese place to have a meal before heading back to Helsinki, but there’s isn’t much to do in Heinola.

Splits:
5k 19:48
10k 20:21 (40:09 total)
15k 20:24 (1:00:33 total)
20k 20:21 (1:20:54 total)
Total: 21.25k in 1:25:56

I was aiming at a steady sub 4min/km pace, but I managed that only for the first 5k, the average pace for the whole race being 4:02min/km in the end. The splits are quite even though, so my pacing wasn’t bad — it’s just that I couldn’t quite hit the target pace. I tried to speed up after 15k, but there was nothing to be done; I think that one or two 15k Steady-State runs at 4min/km pace or so would’ve helped immensely, but my training has been so-so in the summer. Average HR was 171bpm, which is fairly high, so I don’t think I could’ve gone much faster in these conditions.

Well, I may get another chance to have a go at sub 85min in September at Pääkaupunkijuoksu in Helsinki, but as I understand it’s a rather hilly course (I frequently train in the area)…

Race Report: 13.1 New York

07 Apr
April 7, 2011

Race Date: 2.4.2011
Official Finishing Time: 1:25:15 chip time (PB)
Official Overall Position: 14/2484 (finishers), which puts me in the fastest 0.56%
Race number: 2488

I had been looking forward to the 13.1 New York for some time and was finally hoping to get below 90min after the crowded disappointment of the Great North Run 2010. I was confident that I could do it, since I did a 15k training run at 4:10min/km pace not too long ago. The idea was to set off at that pace and get somewhere close to 1:27. Well, I set off a bit faster and never slowed down! I thought that 1:26 would be a dream time, but it never occurred to me that I could already get so close to my season’s target, which is sub 85min. In fact, with 5k to go I realized that a sub 20min 5k should indeed get me there — and I ran a sub 20min 5k, but the extra 200m (which were not a surprise given that the course has a lot of twists and turns) on top of the half marathon meant that it wasn’t quite enough after all. In any case, this was a PB by just over 8min, fancy that!

This was only the second time that the race was organised, and there were some glitches with the gear check and signs, but I had no major difficulties and was happy enough with the race and the post-race offerings (which included a fancy medal and free beer, although not very good beer). The weather was almost perfect: around six degrees Celsius and sunny, with just a tiny bit of wind. The course is extremely flat and fast, although it does include a lot of tight turns and parts of it were a bit flooded. Couldn’t have hoped for much better conditions though.

Finishing Sprint

Finishing Sprint

I ran much of the race with the second lady, I think we gave each other nice pacing as we were doing a very good steady pace. In the end I overtook her with some 4-5k to go and ended up finishing some 15 seconds in front of the first lady, whom I overtook with just 1k to go. In general I didn’t really struggle at any point of the race, although at first I was concerned that I was going too fast. I started to overtake people after 10k or so though and no one came past me, so nothing to worry! The battle only begun around the 17k mark as I really started to push, fortunately I managed to pull it off.

Here are the splits (from Garmin):
5k 20:20
10k 20:18 (40:38 total)
15k 20:01 (1:00:39 total)
20k 19:46 (1:20:25 total)
Total: 21.29k in 1:25:19

So I managed a negative split despite the faster-than-planned start; in fact the second 10k was sub 40min. I ran the last km at sub 3:40min/km pace, so clearly I had something left in the machine! My average heart rate was 166 bpm, which is also the lowest I have had in a half marathon (168 bpm at the Great North Run).

The overall winner crossed the line in 1:09:10, more than eight minutes ahead of everyone else. Must’ve been pretty lonely!

By the way, Ulrike, who was visiting me from the UK, also ran the race and got an excellent time: 1:32:34 — she was the fourth lady!

My next race will be the Scotland Run (10k) in Central Park already this Sunday. Due to it being so soon after the half I don’t expect anything amazing, but I’ll be looking for sub 39min. I did run a 39:01 10k in training recently, so it should be doable, although there is one big hill on the course… Report to follow!
